5 Simple Home Improvement Tips Anyone Can Do

You’ve finally achieved your dream of owning a home, and now you can begin to make it truly your own, but where to start?  There are so many different ways you can improve your residence, from simple maintenance repairs to new room decorations or full on “Man Cave” or “Geek Cave” conversions.  The things you can do to get the most out of your home and possibly add value at the same time, are only limited by your imagination and your budget.  Following are some simple tips to help start you down the path of making your house a home, as well as a place you’re excited to return to every day.

1.      Research and get inspired

In today’s social media-saturated world, inspiration can strike from any corner of the internet.  Pinterest, Instagram, and Facebook are just some of the popular tools at your command to find fresh ways to update your living spaces.  Some may still prefer the tried and true method of driving around to local open house events, especially if it’s a higher end home, to see just some of the details that separate ‘blah’ from ‘wow.’

2.      Take care of the basics first

Before doing any serious modifications or upgrades to your home, be sure to go around and check your fittings and hinges and replace any old or broken parts.  A splash of WD-40 on creaky joints can go a long way in making your home a place of rest instead of a constant reminder of what needs to fixed.  Repair or replace old or loose doorknobs both for added security and to keep a consistent design theme.  If you’re not comfortable with swapping out a lock, say for the front door, any licensed locksmith can do it for you.  After all, your front door is your first line of defense to keeping your home safe.

3.      A splash of color can do wonders

The quickest and easiest ways to change up the look of your home is to add some paint!  With the right tools and some minimal preparation, you can create an entirely new look on a budget.  While many people keep a consistent paint scheme throughout but you can go beyond that and try different color schemes for each room.  Personalizing different living spaces can be a great way to bring families together by asking the kids to help make their room their own or perhaps Dad wants a man cave or Mom wants a new reading nook.  From paint to vinyl peel and stick graphics to mirrors, there are some simple and affordable ways to dress up your space and give it a fresh new look.

4.      Change your layout

Another amazingly simple thing you can do to open up the feng shui of your living quarters is to move stuff around!  You’ve been sitting in the same spot watching TV on the same wall for years, why not try the TV on the other wall, or maybe pushing the couch back and turning it?  There are many ways to arrange a space, so don’t be afraid to think outside of the box and get creative.  The best way to start is to take some architectural paper and draw up a layout of your current space so that you can see how things can look before you exert yourself.  Put square furniture in round corners or vice versa, add a throw rug to your tile floor, and maybe add some oak skirting boards around the room

there’s nothing you can’t do when you put your mind to it.

5.      The garage is part of your home too

If your house comes with a garage, chances are you probably don’t think too much about it when considering a home improvement, despite it being a considerable piece of your overall home aesthetic.  It can be so much more than just a place to store your car or unwanted junk.  You can lay down vinyl tile flooring for a clean, hot rod shop look, and also paint the walls and decorate with vintage metal signs, or simply convert the entire garage into another room entirely.  Of course, if you have an older automatic garage door, you’ll want to make sure it’s in good running order.  Calling up a professional garage door company to inspect or repair your system would be a worthwhile investment.  These days many people convert their garage into their geek cave or in-home movie theater so consider putting up sound isolating tiles and extra weather stripping to keep the elements at bay.

Making your house a home doesn’t have to be difficult or all that expensive.  A lot of times you can make simple decorative changes for a minimal expense that will add a whole new look and feel to your living quarters.  Also doing simple fixes on basic things like door hinges, knobs, wall switches and the like can make certain you have a solid foundation on which to build bigger and better projects in the future.
