Safety first with 30-120 minute fire rated integral blinds

The UK’s first fire-rating accreditation for insulated glass units fitted with integral blinds enables specifiers to maximise safety in public buildings, offices and other commercial spaces, plus multi-occupancy residential properties, whilst maintaining solar shading, privacy and other design goals.

Morley Glass & Glazing now offers a Uni-Blinds sealed unit complete with ScreenLine integral blinds inside which complies with the performance criteria set out in the EU 305/2011 Construction Products Regulation, and it has been independently verified by TUV UK, a UKAS accredited third party testing house.

The development follows extensive technical collaboration between Morley Glass, the manufacturer of ScreenLine integral blind systems Pellini blinds SpA and fire resistant glass specialist Pyroguard. The resulting integral blind system ensures that windows and doors can be designed and specified to incorporate integrity only (E) or radiant heat reduction (EW) for applications requiring between 30 and 120 minute passive fire protection.

The fire rated integral or “between glass” blind system is available in a choice of manual and motorised control systems, including the W Smart solar powered option and the MB motorised system that enables the blinds functionality to be integrated into a building management system.

Ian Short, managing director of Morley Glass & Glazing said: “Given that there are still around 300 fire-related deaths in buildings and more than 200,000 fire alarms raised in the UK every year, we have to be extremely vigilant to ensure buildings are designed to be safe for users. In developing our latest fire rated system, we are providing architects and specifiers with another way to integrate passive fire protection in partitions, facades, doors and windows without having to compromise on other functionality, such as providing privacy.”

Uni-Blinds fire rated integral blinds are available in a wide range of colours and suitable for a wide variety of applications including schools, hospitals, hotels, offices and other commercial buildings, as well as multi-let residential premises. The blinds can be incorporated in sealed units sized up to 2m2 and because they are housed between the panes of glass, they are protected from damage, remain clean and hygienic and are low maintenance throughout their service life.
