Mowing the grass

Mowing is the process of maintaining your lawn by trimming it. The process is encouraging the grass to grow looking healthy and neat, and even get thicker, spread evenly, and develop horizontally.

Nothing can ruin the look of your yard like a weedy neglected lawn. That’s why taking care of your lawn by cutting the grass is a weekly gardening task that should not be overlooked. The best time to mow a lawn is mornings and early evenings, after the hottest part of the day.

Change your mowing pattern each week to encourage a healthy-looking lawn and prevent the grass from leaning to one side. For example, if you mow horizontally in week one, mow diagonally during week two, vertically the following week, and diagonally in week four.

If you want your lawn to thrive and stay healthy, it’s crucial to buy lawn feed and apply it regularly to provide essential nutrients for optimal growth.

5 tips and tricks

Remove ⅓ of the length of the grass

The first lawn mowing tip on the list is to remove ⅓ of the grass length. There are many reasons why ignoring this advice could ruin your grassy area.

Cutting it too short is called scalping and will make the grass weak, susceptible to sun burning and color patching, limit the lawn’s nutrient supply, and become an inviting place for weeds to grow. There are some exceptions where you can do some slight scalping for aesthetic reasons and leveling if you have higher spots on the lawn.

Stick to this rule even if you are dealing with relatively tall grass, otherwise, the blades would be more prone to tearing when you mow the lawn rather than making a clean cut. Leaving your grass a bit longer is way better than cutting it too short.

Mow on dry grass

The rule of thumb in lawn mowing is to always do the trimming when the soil and the grass clippings are dry. That way you get a straight cut every time and clippings are spreading evenly.

If there is moisture from rain or watering, it could weigh the grass down, bending the blades. With that in mind, refrain from mowing when the lawn is damp and soggy to avoid uneven cutting. Mowing a wet lawn could also result in serious clogging of your lawnmower and disruption of the soil compactness. And lastly, wet clippings are likely to clump and make you slip.

Mow in the morning

Avoiding the hottest hours of the day will do you, your lawn, and your mower a favor. Suffering under the scorching sun is not worth it and can weaken your grass at a very vulnerable time, causing serious burning. So as long as the grass is dry in the morning, go ahead and mow away.

Mow in the evening

If you don’t have time for mowing in the mid-morning, you can also mow the lawn in the early evening. By then, the sun will not be so damaging and your grass will have time to heal overnight and grow healthier afterward.

Edge at the end

Last but not least, do the edging at the end of the trimming procedure, not in the beginning. By doing that you will know exactly at what height to cut your grass so it looks neat and presentable and on the same level as the rest of the lawn yard. This is basically the secret to framing your lawn like a professional gardener.
